Dr Michael Strobel

Hydrologist and Director, USDA-NRCS National Water and Climate Change Center

Mike is a hydrologist and the director of the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service’s National Water and Climate Center in Portland, Oregon. He oversees the Snow Survey and Water Supply Forecasting Program, which operates over 880 automated Snow Telemetry (SNOTEL and SNOLITE) stations and manages more than 1,100 manual snow courses in the Western US for producing water supply forecasts. He directs the Soil Climate Analysis Network (SCAN), which measures and transmits data on soil moisture, soil temperature and various climatic parameters from 221 stations across the US.

Mike is a member of a team of scientists from various agencies and universities working to develop the National Soil Moisture Network, which is an effort to integrate data-collection and modeling activities using in situ and remote sensing systems into a coordinated product.
